Born in 1987 in China and currently based in Paris, Mao Tao is an artist whose multifaceted work spans installations, video, photography, and painting. His creations are deeply rooted in the exploration of spirit and consciousness, viewing his works as extensions and continuations of the construction of consciousness. For him, art is not the end of creation but a bridge—a gateway to the inner perceptions of the viewer. As he says, “The work is the carrier, perception is the real medium.” This concept places the viewer at the center of the creative process, making them not only the recipient of the work, but also a part of its creation.

Mao Tao’s creations delve into deep self-awareness, individual states, reflections on contemporary society, and essential explorations of the blurred boundaries between existence and consciousness, material and immaterial, time and space, the known and the unknown, reality and illusion, order and chaos. His works circumvent the artificial dichotomy of subject and object as diametrically opposed, transcending the limited perspective of duality. He explores the mechanisms that go beyond the physical appearance but profoundly affect our emotions, memories, and consciousness, drawing inspiration from the contradictions and imperfections of daily life, and provoking the viewer to think deeply about the unseen. His work carries a poetic power, with delicate emotions and an attention to detail that imbues it with a sense of tranquility and warmth, often infused with a touch of humour.

In his practice, Mao Tao attempts to construct a multi-dimensional language system—visual, perceptual, and spiritual. In a nearly philosophical manner, he leads viewers through the surface of the material world to a broader and deeper spiritual insight, encouraging us to re-examine and rethink our relationship with the world. He explores how art can become a bridge connecting reality and transcendence amidst the eternal flux of impermanence and emptiness.
